Fiji Reports Nine Deaths By Drowning This Year Alone

SUVA, Fiji, March 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) – There have been nine deaths by drowning in Fiji so far this year.

And this week the Fijian Police recorded two cases of drowning, after a one-year-old boy and a 29-year-old woman became Fiji’s latest drowning victims.

The police said, the one-year-old victim accompanied his father to their farm and while tending to their sheep, the child allegedly wandered off where he was later found floating in a fish pond. The investigation continues into the incident.

And in the second incident, a 29-year-old woman was last seen leaving her home to bathe in the nearby river. When she failed to return home, a search was conducted where she was found lying motionless near a river in Naitasiri, one of Fiji’s 14 provinces on Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji.

Health officials have confirmed that the victim is a known epileptic patient, however a postmortem will still be conducted, to confirm the cause of her death.

Fiji’s drowning death toll currently stands at nine this year.– NNN-AGENCIES
