Five Killed As Vehicle Falls Into Gorge In Eastern India

NEW DELHI, Nov 24 (NNN-PTI) – Five people from the same family were killed yesterday, after the vehicle they were in, skidded off the road and fell into a gorge, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, officials said.

The accident took place in Govindpur area of Dhanbad district, about 161 km north-east of Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand.

“This morning, a car carrying five members of a family skidded off the road, near Kaldih More and fell into about 100 feet deep gorge,” a police official at Govindpur said. “Following the accident, all five occupants of the car – two men, two women and a child – died on the spot.”

According to police, rescuers have retrieved the bodies from the gorge.

Preliminary investigations revealed, the ill-fated vehicle was being rashly driven, following which the driver suddenly lost control over it.

Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

India’s federal minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari said, the government has set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.– NNN-PTI
