NEW DELHI, Jul 24 (NNN-PTI) – Eight people were killed after two cars collided head-on, in the southern Indian state of Telangana, police said, today.
The accident took place late last night, near the Chennaram gate, in Nagarkurnool district, about 120 km south of Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana.
The victims include six passengers in the cars and two bystanders, a senior police officer, posted at Nagarkurnool district, said.
Preliminary reports suggest both cars were being rashly driven at high speed.
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Telangana Chief Minister, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, expressed grief over the deaths.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, often caused by overloading, bad road condition and reckless driving.
Around 150,000 people are killed every year, in around half a million road accidents across India, officials said.
Last month, Indian Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, said, the government set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024.– NNN-PTI
