Afghan Forces Recapture District In Western Herat Province: Gov’t

HERAT, Jul 23 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Afghan government forces launched a counter-offensive and recaptured Karukh district, in the western Herat province today, killing 15 Taliban militants, the provincial government said in a statement.

The counter-offensive was launched early today and the militants were evicted within hours, enabling the security forces to restore law and order there, according to the statement.

“At least 15 Taliban fighters have been killed and 20 others injured,” the statement said, adding, the cleanup operation would last until the area is cleared of insurgents.

Taliban militants, who have captured more than a dozen districts in Herat province over the past one month, are yet to make comment on the situation in Karukh district.

A spokesman for Afghanistan’s Defence Ministry, Fawad Aman, said that, the government forces would soon launch counter-offensives to recapture all the districts overrun by the Taliban outfit since the start of the U.S.-led forces withdrawal from Afghanistan early May.– NNN-AGENCIES
