Maldives To Ease Restrictions Amid Lower Daily COVID-19 Cases

MALE, Jul 8 (NNN-PSM) – Maldives will lift an ongoing curfew and ease restrictions, aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, as daily cases have dropped, President’s Spokesperson, Mabrook Azeez announced here, yesterday.

Starting today, individuals who have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, can now travel between islands without a compulsory quarantine period, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced. Travellers must present a negative PCR test taken at least 14 days after their second dose.

Guesthouses in the country will be reopened for tourists, starting Jul 30, under strictly enforced safety measures, Azeez said. He said that, the government will prioritise vaccinating 60 percent of residents, in islands where guesthouses operate, and 90 percent of guesthouse employees.

Meanwhile, resorts in the country will reopen on Jul 15, he said. Precautions will be taken to test 10 percent of resort employees every month, he said.

A total of 105 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Maldives on Tuesday, a significant decline from the daily average case count in May and Jun.

A total of 74,585 cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the Maldives, since the pandemic began.– NNN-PSM
