Myanmar’s NLD Pushes Police To Act, Over Raid On Head Office In Yangon

YANGON, Feb 24 (NNN-MNA) – Myanmar’s National League for Democracy (NLD) announced that, it will continue pushing police to take action, over a recent raid on the party’s Yangon-based headquarters, since an investigation has yet to be carried out.

“Around 14 or 15 personnel in military, police uniforms and civilian clothing, broke into the head office, did a search and seized documents at 10.00 p.m. on Feb 9, according to the CCTV records,” Soe Lay, NLD representative, told a press conference yesterday.

The party members pressed charges at the Bahan township police station on Feb 10, and will push district, regional level police or Home Affairs Ministry, to take action over the late-night raid, said the NLD.

The incident came, after President U Win Myint and State Counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi were detained by the military, along with other NLD officials on Feb 1, the day when the new parliament session was scheduled to be convened.

A one-year state of emergency was declared in Myanmar on Feb 1, and the state power was transferred to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing, also chair of the State Administration Council.

The military alleged massive voting fraud in the Nov, 2020 general elections, which saw the NLD win a majority of seats in both houses of parliament.

Myanmar’s Union Election Commission dismissed the allegation.

The newly-formed State Administration Council, reformed the Union Election Commission, to review the electoral process of last year’s elections, during the state of emergency.

The new Union Election Commission recently invited all political parties to conduct negotiations on Feb 26. But the NLD will not attend the meeting, said the party’s representative.– NNN-MNA
