Mexican President Obrador praises “Roma” director on Oscars win

MEXICO CITY, Feb 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador congratulated filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron on winning three Oscars at the 91st Academy Awards for his original movie “Roma.”

“We congratulate Alfonso Cuaron for the Oscars, for the recognition of the film “Roma.” We are very pleased that a Mexican, a team, a group of professional actors, have received such important recognition in cinema,” said the president.

He also acknowledged that racism, the movie’s central theme, continues to be a social scourge in Mexico, where indigenous groups often live in impoverished rural communities while light-skinned descendants of European settlers inhabit bustling urban centers.

“In Mexico, unfortunately, there is still a lot of racism,” said Lopez Obrador.

“Roma” was nominated in 10 categories and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography. — NNN-AGENCIES
