Indian Parliament Speaker Seeks Probe Into Death Of Lawmaker

NEW DELHI, Dec 31 (NNN-PTI) – Speaker of the lower house of Indian parliament, Om Birla, yesterday sought a high-level independent inquiry, into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dharme Gowda, a politician and local lawmaker of Karanataka.

Gowda was the deputy chairperson of Karnataka Legislative Council, whose body was found on a railway track in Chikmagalur (Karnataka) on Tuesday.

“It is necessary to have a high-level probe through an independent agency into his death. It is the duty of all of us to safeguard the prestige of legislative bodies and dignity and freedom of Presiding officers,” Birla said.

Local media reports said, a note indicated Gowda committed suicide.

Gowda, belonging to Janata Dal (Secular), last month hit the headlines, when he was heckled and manhandled by other members, after he occupied the presiding officer’s chair, ostensibly to take up a no-confidence motion against the house chairperson.– NNN-PTI
