MSILA (Algeria), Aug 9 (NNN-APS) -- Minister of Mining and Energy Youcef Yousfi has disclosed a programme to increase electricity production by 8,000 megawatts (MW) in the next five years, through an investment of DZD1,800 billion.
The planned investments "greatly exceed current projects in Algeria, said the minister, who chaired a working session, at Msila’s provincial administration headquarters (248-km southeast of Algiers), devoted to electricity network Msila-Barika, Batna.
The meeting was attended by the chief executive officer of national electricity and gas group Sonelgaz and local officials.
The programme has been developed following reports which found that 4,000 MW scheduled for the period between 2011 and 2016 will not meet the high demand, especially during the summer season, Yousfi said
The minister underlined that the Algerian government had made huge efforts to meet the increasing demand over the past five years.
Production capacity rose from 300 MW in 1962 and 1,000 MW in 1980 to 11,000 MW. -- NNN-APS
