FIERCE FIGHTING RAGES CLOSE TO DAMASCUS. Smoke rises after fierce fighting was reported between Syrian troops and rebel forces in the suburbs of the capital Damascus on 26 June 2012. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy fighting near the Republican Guard headquarters in Qudsiya and in the Damascus suburbs of al-Hama and Mashrou' Dumar, just 9 km outside the capital, It said 38 civilians and 24 troops had been killed during the day across Syria.Independent sources claim seeing the most intense violence in certain areas since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began more than a year ago.
