AUSSIE EXPERTS MAY BE SENT TO PAKISTAN TO SLOW FLOW OF INSURGENTS TO AFGHANISTAN

MELBURNE, June 23 (NNN-BERNAMA) -- Australian counter-terrorism experts may soon be sent to Pakistan to slow the spread of Islamic extremism and stem the flow of insurgents into Afghanistan, media reports here say.

Building on a counter-terrorism memorandum signed between Australia and Pakistan in 2005, the programme would be similar to existing policies developed between Australia and some Asia-Pacific countries and reflect the deepening relationship between the two governments, Fairfax newspapers say.

The new measures would involve security training and assistance and the development of an extradition treaty, senior government sources told Fairfax, adding that it was hoped the plan would promote stability in the region.

Pakistan's High Commissioner (ambassador) to Australia, Jalil Jilani, said Pakistan would look on the plans favourably as they saw Australia as a "very friendly country".

"The government and people of Pakistan would desire a strengthening of relations in almost every area," Jilani told Fairfax media.

"I do not think there are issues involved in co-operating on counter terrorism activities as long as it does not impinge on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Pakistan."
