File photograph: by Douglas Magno\/AFP via Getty Images\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">A researcher works on the development of a vaccine against Covid-19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BRUSSELS, May 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ireland has pledged \u20ac18 million to Gavi, the vaccine alliance, as part of an international effort that raised \u20ac7.3 billion to fund the search for a vaccine against Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Taoiseach&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/topics\/topics-7.1213540?article=true&amp;tag_person=Leo+Varadkar\">Leo Varadkar<\/a>&nbsp;made the announcement by video link to a EU\/G20 organised event that was described by head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen as a sprint at the start of what will be a \u201cmarathon\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Much more will be needed over the coming months, she said, during the three-hour event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisers include the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/topics\/topics-7.1213540?article=true&amp;tag_organisation=European+Union\">European Union<\/a>, Britain and Norway, Japan, Canada and Saudi Arabia. China, where the virus originated in December, was only represented by its ambassador to the European Union, and the United States did not take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe the fourth of May will mark a turning point in our fight against coronavirus because today the world is coming together,\u201d von der Leyen said at the start of the event, pledging \u20ac1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France pledged \u20ac500 million and Germany \u20ac525 million. Norway pledged \u20ac1 billion and Spain pledged \u20ac125 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Varadkar said Ireland was pledging the money so that \u201cthe poorest countries in the world will have access to the Covid-19 vaccine if and when it is developed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the contribution would be part of the European Union\u2019s comprehensive effort to combat the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland was also going to harness the capabilities of its research sector, universities and phamaceutical companies and will co-finance a public private partnership in immunology research, valued at up to \u20ac10 million over the next three years, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State had already given \u20ac60 million in direct or repurposed grants to enable the UN and other partners to respond rapidly to the situation on the ground, including \u20ac9.5 million given to the World Health Organisation, a fourfold increase in the usual contribution, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The virus did not respect borders and was the shared enemy of all. \u201cThe only way to defeat it is to work together on a multilateral basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sooner or later a vaccine will be developed, as will medicines that treat Covid-19, and it was really important that \u201cno-one in the world is left out when that happens,\u201d the Taoiseach said. &#8212; NNN-AGENCIES<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A researcher works on the development of a vaccine against Covid-19 BRUSSELS, May 5 (NNN-AGENCIES) &#8212; Ireland has pledged \u20ac18 million to Gavi, the vaccine alliance, as part of an international effort that raised \u20ac7.3 billion to fund the search for a vaccine against Covid-19.
