DAR ES SALAAM, May 24 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE European Union (EU), under its Global Gateway strategy, has committed to provide 990 million Euros (over 3tri\/-) to support Tanzania\u2019s energy sector, focusing on expanding clean energy access and enhance regional energy connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fund will include direct contributions of 565 bn\/- to support clean energy access and cross-border integration under the Global Gateway\u2019s climate and energy pillar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the statement released during the commemoration of 50 years of EU in Tanzania, the key investments will include the Kakono Hydropower Plant, valued at 880bn\/-, with an EU contribution of 106 bn\/- as well as co-financing for the Zambia and Uganda interconnector projects, together valued at 1.8 tri\/-.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe Day 2025 marks 50 years of EU-Tanzania partnership and 25 years of EU-AU relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her address, EU Ambassador to Tanzania, Christine Grau said that over the past seven years, EU support of 192 bn\/- has helped to connect more than one-third of the county\u2019s villages to electricity, improving energy access for over one million rural people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said EU is also supporting affordable and clean cooking solutions with an existing investment of 88bn\/- and a new 59bn\/- regional programme to scale up clean cooking and green energy solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFurther investment in energy infrastructure to support Tanzania\u2019s agriculture and mining sectors is in the pipeline,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said the EU will continue to be Tanzania\u2019s leading partner in trade, investment and development, advocating for peace, prosperity and inclusive progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLooking ahead, the EU is preparing a new phase of cooperation for 2026, aligned with Tanzania\u2019s Vision 2050, focusing on climate resilience, sustainable growth, youth employment and democratic governance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She reaffirmed the EU continuous support to the country\u2019s ambitions in renewable energy, digitalisation, value addition and sustainable infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur partnership is evolving into a mature and strategic collaboration based on mutual interests and shared prosperity. We are not just donors, we are partners and we are here to stay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added: \u201cThrough the Global Gateway Strategy, we are supporting Tanzania\u2019s ambitions in renewable energy, digitalisation, value addition and sustainable infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation for Tanzania Mahmoud Thabit Kombo welcomed the EU\u2019s continued support, including in the energy sector and commended the EU for aligning its cooperation with Tanzania\u2019s Vision 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe EU is a trusted and longstanding partner of Tanzania. Our collaboration spans a wide range of sectors, including energy, renewable energy, women and youth empowerment, climate change, education and agriculture. We deeply value the EU\u2019s significant contribution to the development of our nation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
